F.A.Q.

  1. What is the VMT?
The VMT is Shrewsbury High School’s competitional math league. It stands for Varsity Math Team. We prepare for and participate in several Mathematics problem-solving competitions throughout the year.

  1. What competitions does the VMT participate in?
Over the past few years, we have participated in the WoCoMaL, MAML/NEAML, and the AMC/AIME, and sent students to try for the ARML regional team. This year we will also be taking part in the Mandelbrot. We are currently in the process of improving our program and expanding it to new competitions, such as the HMMT.

  1. Who can join the VMT?
Although the team is designed for students in grades 10 - 12, any SHS student can join (9th graders have a separate math team, the Freshman Math Team).

  1. I am interested in joining the VMT. Who should I contact?
If you are interested in the VMT, contact either of the advisors or any of the captains. Contact information is availible in the “Contact Us” section, accessible from the menu to the left.

  1. Can I join in the middle of the year?
Technically yes, though it will be harder to rate your performance against existing members.

  2. When/where does the team meet?
The VMT meets every Thursday after school in A218 at 2:15.

  1. Is it super hard? Do I need to know calculus and stuff??
None of the competitions we take part in require calculus. Rather than focusing on how much material you have covered, math competitions focus on your mathematical reasoning and problem solving abilities. However, being comfortable with trigonometry opens up more options.
